TO:-
The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies,
Colonial Office,
Downing Street,
S.W.1.
sir,
In reference to previous correspondence from this Society upon the mui tsai system in Hong Kong, I beg to ask, on behalf of my Committee, whether the Scheme for abolition of the system was completed according to the Proclamation issued by the Governor, at the end of 1922, and whether, and at what date, it passed into law?
The Committee would be glad to learn whether any large number of girls have left the households in which they were employed as mui tsai, and if it has been found necessary to provide suitable accommodation and oversight for girls so displaced?
Our attention has been drawn to the recent report of a conviction of the Chinese manager of a rice Firm in Hong
Kong, for cruelty to his mui taai in tying her up and beating
her, and I am to ask whether the Colonial Office have any information upon this case which they feel able to place at the disposal of our Committee?
I am, Sir,
Your obedient servant,
Travers Burlan
Secretary.
